The People’s
Progressive Party recently elected its Executive Committee
and Dr. Frank Anthony and Moses Nagamootoo were not among
those elected to the top brass of the party.
Donald Ramotar was
once again elected, unopposed, as General Secretary of the
party, while Ali Baksh, Komal Chand, Navin Chandrapal,
Clinton Collymore, Jagan Janet, Bharrat Jagdeo, Roger
Luncheon, Zulfikar Mustapha, Harripersaud Nokta, Reepu Daman
Persaud, Robert Persaud, Ulric Ramanah, Ralph Ramkarran,
Clement Rohee and Gail Teixeira were all elected executive
members.
President Jagdeo
scored the highest number of votes followed closely by Roger
Luncheon, Clement Rohee, Gail Teixeira, Janet Jagan, Robert
Persaud and Ralph Ramkarran.
Irfan Ali, Ganga
Persaud and Pauline Sukhai were elected candidate members to
the executive committee.
Both Dr. Anthony
and Nagamootoo secured high votes at the party’s recently
concluded 29th congress.
Kaieteur News was
told that both men were disappointed, with Nagamootoo
departing the meeting even before it had concluded.
Judging from the
composition of the executive, the likely candidates for the
2011 elections are Donald Ramotar, Ralph Ramkarran and
Robert Persaud, although it is not a foregone conclusion
that the presidential candidate will come from the
executive. This newly elected executive will decide on the
2011 presidential candidate.
The meeting also
elected Janet Jagan as editor for ‘Thunder’ and the
editorial board which consists of Donald Ramotar, Ralph
Ramkarran, Moses Nagamootoo, Lawrence Rodney, Navin
Chandarpal, Hydar Ali, Kellawan Lall, Irfan Ali, Clinton
Collymore and Clement Rohee.
The new secretariat
is composed of General Secretary, Donald Ramotar; Organising
Secretary, Ulric Ramanah; Education Secretary, Hydar Ali;
Mass Organization Secretary, Robert Persaud and Finance
Secretary, Irfan Ali.
Dr. Frank Anthony
was elected as Culture and Youth Secretary while Gail
Teixeira was elected as Governance Secretary.
The Controls
Commission comprises Navin Chandrapal, Komal Chand and
Clinton Collymore.
President Jagdeo
received the overwhelming majority of the votes cast at the
congress, with former President Janet Jagan and Minister of
Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, securing the
second and third largest blocks of votes.
The elections were
held to decide the new batch of 35 members to the Central
Committee as well as five Candidate Members.
A total of 913
votes were cast from a list of 1020 delegates.
