International Dominoes Tournament Concluded

The international dominoes tournament hosted by the Caribbean Dominoes Association (CDA, USA), which started on Monday, August 11 and included teams from England, Guyana and the United States, officially ended on Monday, August, 25, 2008, with the Guyana team emerging winners of the overall competition.

Guyana amassed 22 points to secure first place. England and United States both got 16 points, but England edged out the United States on sixes to gain second place, leaving the hosts in the cellar.

The Guyana team was represented by: F. Gaul, L. ‘Poison’ Boson, E. Dodson, D. Edghill, M. Dorn, D. Gomes, T. Morris and Y. Duncan; The English team was represented by: E. Grant, E. Favourite, C. Shellcross, D. Duguid, C. Duguid, D. Adams, P. Cadugan, C. Robertson and J. Duncan and the United States team was represented by: L. ‘Butch’ Jones, O. Brotherson, A. Bourne, D. Gittens, B. Charles, M. Jackson, L. D’Aguiar and M. Roach.

The games were very competitive, but in the final analysis, Guyana, under the leadership of their captain Linden ‘Poison’ Boston, proved too crafty for their opponents.

On Friday, August 22, a Presentation Reception was held at the Mackenzie Sports Club on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn. The reception was well attended and everyone expressed what a wonderful time they had representing their respective teams.

Butch Jones, President of the Caribbean Dominoes Association, expressed his appreciation of the orderly, but competitive way, in which the players approached their games.

The official results of all matches are as follows:

1st Place — Guyana, 22 points — Trophy donated by Mike Harrison Shipping of London (replicas donated by C.D.A.)

2nd Place — England, 16 points —Trophy and replicas donated by C.D.A.

MVP Awards — 1st Test, F. Gaul (Guyana); 2nd Test, L. Boston (Guyana); 3rd Test, T. Morris (Guyana); 4th Test, E. Favourite (England); 5th Test, F. Gaul (Guyana) and the 6th Test, D. Duguid (England) — All trophies for the MVPs were donated by Allan Bourne (C.D.A.).

Ladies Match winner was (Guyana) — Trophies donated by Roland Roberts (C.D.A.).

Club Match winners: Arsenal Sports Club, GAESCA Sports Club and Caribbean Dominoes Association (U.S.A.).

Every two years, these three teams compete for bragging rights. So far, they have met 15 times and Guyana with its spectacular and convincing win has now equalled England and the United States, with five wins each.

They will meet in Guyana in two years and a new competition will begin. May the best team prevail. At right are pictures from the Presentation Reception.
